Shimano Goes Electronic

In an interesting move, Shimano introduces a new shifting system for top tier road bikes that eliminates the typical wound-steel cables and replaces them with solid-state switches. The crazy thing about the new system is that is weighs 67 grams less than the Dura-Ace 7800 and 68 grams more than the Dura-Ace 7900. I would guess that once they continue to perfect the technology, the weight differences will continue to improve and eventually blow cable lines out of the water.
According to Wired.com, Shimano plans to being adding this as an upgrade to the 7900 group (2009 models), which starts at $2,600.Although many cyclists will probably scoff at this “upgrade,” I can see this being a great way to improve efficiency and durability of a bike and its systems. Although a battery on a road bike is odd, who wouldn’t want self-calibrating derailleurs?
