Remember the Milk Review

To Do Lists Made Easy

I used to be a huge Franklin Planner type of guy and found myself doing so much writing and planning that I never got anything done. As I moved away from using my planner, I found myself still needing some sort of system for tasks and goal planning and so I started using composition notebooks. Still, although I was able to use them effectively, they were starting to add up and again my system became unstable and difficult to manage.

Being the internet junkie that I am, I’d tried various online task management systems and never really found anything that suited my tastes. Finally, the web 2.0 boom hit and the hunt began for a relevant, intuitive, and web 2.0 integrated task manager began.

It didn’t take long before I found out about Remember the Milk from one of my favorite sites: The Freelance Switch. I immediately typed in the URL and created an account, looking forward to seeing just how good RTM was.

At first, I was disappointed and I couldn’t figure out exactly why. The interface seemed difficult to navigate for my tastes and the site didn’t do a really good job of explaining how to use its software. However, as I began to use RTM and find my way through the program, I realized how easy and intuitive it was. Remember the Milk allows you to set up different task lists (personal, study, and work) and lets you prioritize the tasks according to your wishes. However, you can view all tasks at once and/or sort by priority, date, or name. You can even share or publish your task lists, as well as view them in RSS feed format. Basically, RTM covers all the “essential” web 2.0 features very well.

However, the features of RTM do not end there and in fact I haven’t even revealed the best features RTM is capable of. Remember the Milk easily incorporates with Gmail, where you can email yourself tasks through the gmail interface. RTM also incorporates with Google Calender, which I happen to use frequently. Remember the Milk creates its own calendar block and automatically updates based on your to do lists (click here for the RTM/Gcal download). My absolute favorite feature of RTM is the twitter interface. I know many of you are Twitter junkies like myself and by using Remember the Milk for Twitter you can direct message tasks to your RTM list, where they hit your inbox for processing. For instance:

pick up the milk adds a new task with the specified name to the Inbox

call jimmy at 5pm tomorrow adds a new task with the specified name and due date to the Inbox

@username pick up the milk sends task to the specified Twitter username (this person must be set up with Remember The Milk too)
!complete call jimmy completes the specified task (shortcut: !c)

The Twitter functions alone make this beta version of Remember the Milk worth registering for, but it also supports Iphone, Blackberry, Windows Mobile, Google Gears, and multiple other interfaces. Needless to say, I expect to be using RTM for some time to come.
