Do You Vblog?

Video Blogging is Going to be…

the next generation of TV, and although the title is intentionally butchered to poke fun at the names of new social media sites, I cannot help but admire the power of the rising wave that is social media.

Take a look at what Ed Dale did with the 30 Day Challenge or what Gary Vaynerchuk is doing with wine and you’ll see what I mean. People are using videos to brand themselves and get their face in front of an audience, but they are also harnessing the power of video to sell and market businesses. YouTube got the party started, but I think there are other companies, such as Viddler that are really going to turn some heads in the future.

Viddler not only lets you record and broadcast videos in excellent quality, but they also allow you to brand your videos with your own logo, which is huge! Just think of the power of creating your own videos and being able to tie them in to your brand throughout the entire video.

Social Media Will Be Better Than TV

There are video bloggers doing TV show-like podcasts that are more efficient, interactive, and exciting than most TV shows. Recently you have seen a big push from TV media to try and interact with their viewers, but I believe it came too late. The video blogger gets first hand interaction with their audience, which lends to a more personal experience for both parties. As a result, the blogger usually knows his audience better than anyone and can offer informative and beneficial programming and advertising fine tuned for his or her audience.

Personal Interaction Wins the Day

I can watch one of Gary Vaynerchuk’s videos and send him an email, which he will reply to within a day or two. I can follow my favorite bloggers on Twitter and reach back to them instantly. I’ve developed quite a few relationships with people I normally wouldn’t have access to simply because they’ve opened themselves up to social media.

Social media is on the verge of making rockstars out of people that would otherwise have no outlet for their talent. Let’s face it, TV, radio, and movies are difficult mediums to break in to. Any guy or gal with a video camera can create a show on the Internet that can reach millions instantly.

I think the general video blogger category is over-saturated, but there is room for nearly every other niche known to man. In the next 5 years we’ll have new stars doing sports, animal planet, cooking, and just about anything else you see on TV now.

If you can’t tell, I’m about to give in to the trend myself and start work on a few video projects. Unfortunately, because I am blogging from Afghanistan I’m having issues getting up and running. Of course, I won’t let that stop me…I’ll just have to deal with a little delay. So don’t be surprised if you start seeing a video thrown in every now and then here at Nathanhangen.com. In the end, it won’t stop at video, but in the short-term I think that is where things are moving.

By the way, did you get my free E-Book yet?

Great post. Video blogging is not for everyone and as for text and image content, video must have certain quality in order to successfully make buzz or give value. Also, many people worldwide don’t have access to broadband and high speed Internet which might be a problem.

However I really like video and microblogging integration in some services like http://12seconds.tv and others. Another good opportunity is to make money online using video content via services like http://www.metacafe.com and similar.

I agree that video blogging may not be for everyone, but I believe the rise of it as a preferred medium will be coming very shortly. Internet access is a huge problem, but even here in Kabul I have access to high speed internet.

The main point I’m trying to get across in this post and this blog is this:

Society is becoming more connected every day, and as the mediums we use to connect change and evolve, we can expect a massive change in the way we do business and interact with each other.

Thank you for your contributions to the discussion. You made some good points.
